One of my best friends, Afton, invited me last Sunday to check out Bare Escentuals. She claimed that her good friend, who was always an avid MAC user, had made the switch and loved the foundation. I'm always up for someone else to do my make-up, so I figured, why not? In the back of my mind, though, I did wonder if we would be charged for the makeover and if the products would make my sensitive skin break out. I decided to be optimistic, so we headed out to the new Bare Escentuals store at a nearby mall.
Upon entering the store, I couldn't keep my eyes off of what seemed like hundreds of glittery eyeshadow! The store had pretty faux wood floors and sparkling pink chandeliers. It was immaculately clean and girly. My kind of place! Afton and I walked around a bit (just a bit, the store is pretty small) and overheard that you needed an appointment for a makeover. Disappointed, we were ready to schedule an appointment for later in the day... However, a young Bare Escentuals consultant, Margaux, was available to help us out and give us makeovers both at the same time.
We sat down at the front of the store facing out at the mall. I could clearly see Express and everyone walking by. They could see me, too. So, honestly, I felt like I was in a bit of a fishbowl. I did my best to ignore this and concentrated on filling out a survey Margaux had given us. The survey focused on our skin-type and make-up preferences (so the products we used that day would better suit our likes and needs). Prior to putting on our make-up, we removed all other makeup using water and a sample Bare Escentuals cleanser. I didn't really like this part at all… There were we were, sitting at the front of the store, fishbowl in effect, with cleansing foam on our faces and no make-up on. I wasn't really sure what I had gotten myself into.
I watched as Margaux tested and drew three different colored stripes of foundation on Afton’s cheek. Great, I thought, no make-up and now I have three different colored stripes on my face. I was fidgety and anxious to get the whole thing over with! I was relieved when Margaux settled on my color of Medium Beige (also approved by another Bare Escentuals consultant.)
It was then that Margaux introduced Afton and I to the "Swirl, tap, buff" phenomena associated with Bare Escentuals. Margaux applied the foundation using this methodology to only half of our faces and then Afton and I applied the foundation to the other half. Thus, I was not only getting made over, but I was also learning how to use the product and apply the make-up myself. SMART! I was getting some pampering mixed with experience using the product myself.
In the end, Margaux had helped me to apply Medium Beige powder, tulip blush, and the illuminating mineral veil. She finished off my look with a dramatic copper eye and a natural lip using the Buxom plumping glosses. All in all, very pretty - and, it didn't feel like I was wearing any make-up! My skin was even and smooth... almost glowing! I was smitten with not only the way my skin looked, but also how it felt!
After our makeovers, I did what any girl would do. I bought a foundation starter kit. And, I definitely don't regret it! Truly, ever since I started using the product my skin has actually become healthier! In fact, after only four days, I headed over to Sephora to pick up a few more Bare Escentuals goodies - including a foundation primer and the illuminating mineral veil. (Note: If you are interested in more products and kits, I have found that QVC, the Bare Escentuals store, as well as Ulta seem to carry the most products).
Ultimately, I love the Bare Escentuals make-up for the skin. Eventually, I hope to branch out a bit a try more of the Buxom glosses and maybe a few eyeshadows here and there (I don't think I'll ever part with my MAC and Urban Decay shadows though!). Truly, it was pretty great experience. And, even if people were watching… my make-up looked amazing!
